Descaling (see our step-by-step descaling guide) removes mineral build-up, but it's only one part of keeping a machine clean. Coffee oils build up separately, in different places, and need their own routine and supplies.
Backflush cleaning powder or tablets
- Used with a blind (blank) filter basket to flush coffee oils out of the group head on machines that support backflushing.
- Check your machine's manual first — not every machine type supports backflushing, and using the wrong method can cause damage.
- A common beginner routine is backflushing weekly to fortnightly with regular home use, but follow your manufacturer's recommended interval.
Descaling solution
- A separate product from backflush powder — descaler dissolves mineral scale, it doesn't clean coffee oils.
- Use the interval and product your manufacturer recommends; mixing up descaler and backflush powder, or using the wrong one for your machine type, is a common beginner mistake.
Brushes and small tools
- A small group head brush helps clear loose coffee grounds from around the shower screen between deeper cleans.
- A portafilter spout brush keeps the spouts from clogging with dried coffee residue.
- A soft cloth for wiping the steam wand immediately after each use, which prevents milk residue from hardening on it.
Shower screen and basket soak
- Some owners periodically remove the shower screen (the perforated disc above the portafilter) and soak it along with baskets in a mild cleaning solution to clear built-up oils.
- Only do this if your specific machine allows the shower screen to be removed — check your manual.

A simple beginner cleaning routine
- Daily: wipe the steam wand after use, empty and rinse the drip tray.
- Weekly to fortnightly: backflush if your machine supports it.
- As recommended by your manual: descale (see our descaling guide).
Bottom line
Backflush powder, descaling solution, and a couple of small brushes cover almost everything a beginner needs. They're inexpensive compared to the machine itself, and using them on a regular schedule is one of the cheapest ways to make a machine last longer and keep tasting good.
Always check your machine's manual for which cleaning methods and products it specifically supports.
